Five Loaves, Two Fishes

a place to expose thoughts, interests and discoveries

Fives Loaves, Two Fishes is my playground. It’s where I test design elements, babble on various subjects that I find interesting, promote my books, those of others I appreciate and simply mess around. If you know me you’ll probably understand, if you don’t know me it doesn’t matter but maybe you’ll find something useful.

This is a project I finally decided to complete. It’s been in the works for a while and one day I made the decision to complete it. That’s an important thing to note and very powerful….make a decision!

Trap – Pass – Move is a short book but took nearly two years for me to complete because I was not dedicated to its completion. I doubted my ‘authority’, was uncertain whether it would be accepted. Well, forget all that, Trap – Pass – Move coaching worked, players and parents accepted it, I accepted it, that’s what matters. Every coach has his own system, or should. Not everyone will agree but perhaps some coach will benefit form that’s inside Trap – Pass – Move and that means some kids may benefit.

It’s to the point, gives practice schedules from u6-u14, explains why, offers data to support the whys and makes since. It’s also cheap so all you volunteer coaches can afford it. Buy a copy here.

Learning, Growing & Life Adventures

Continual learning is essential, I believe, to a fulfilling life. Who would  want to at 60 have the same skills and knowledge they developed in their year 25th year? How dull. We see people who seem to fit this profile, non-learners, non explorers, every day. Or at...
Local advertising spending in Williamsport PA.

If Display is Dead What is Alive?

Last week I wrote a piece on local ad spending. It was spurred by stats I found stating that the Williamsport ad spending is projected to top $60 million in 2017 and that more than half of that would be spent online. It further showed that 76.2% would be spent on...
Use your social platforms to engage your customers and drive sales.

Your Social Sucks

Your Social Sucks, And I Mean That In The Nicest Possible Way. You think that just because you or your $12 an hour clerk posts or Facebook a pic of a sale sign or a menu or a dish your serve or smiling employees or what ever three times a week you have a social media...

Pokémon Go and Socialization in Gaming

Wednesday evening I became aware of a wave, a title wave apparently. My family and I were having dinner with friends when one started talking to Caleb, my 14 year old, about Pokémon Go, a new game app that was recently released (July 6th in the U.S.). “It’s a what?”...
Skip the dribbling drills and teach your players to trap, pass and move.

Skip the Dribbling Drills

Over the weekend a player parent overheard me advising a young player to skip practicing dribbling and work on passing and trapping. When the young player had left the parent stepped up and asked what I meant by "skip practicing dribbling". "Dribbling is such a small...
Trap - Pass - Move, Do Your Job and trust your team mates to do theirs

Developing a Quick Trigger

I love talking to other coaches. Maybe more than that I love talking to players. It doesn't matter what age or level I enjoy picking their brain, making them think and just talking soccer. Recently I had a chance to chat with one or our areas dominant high school...

Hey Coach…..Shut Up!

Spring soccer season is nearly upon us, that means new teams and new coaches. The one piece of advice I have for a new coach.....any coach.....is to SHUT UP during a game. Let the kids play. If you've done a good job in practices they will know what to do. If they...

Coaches Must Research and Grow

I like to watch other teams practice. Teams of all ages. I am constantly looking for new things to teach, new ways to teach. Mostly I shake my head in dismay. I don’t think that’s arrogance, I hope not. What I see are teams that pass poorly, trap worse and players who...
Learning new things and learning to be better are keys to a joy filled life.

Learning = Living

I like to learn. No, I love learning new things. That was not so when I was in school. School was boring. School made no since.  But school wasn't about learning interesting things, At least that was how I viewed it at the time. I find some of the information my sons...

Local Ad Spending, $26 mil on Display?!

I picked up the image to the right the other day when I pondered how much is spent on advertising in Williamsport. I got sidetracked. It's been a while since I've had the numbers at my hands of ad money spent in the Williamsport area, the breakdown by media and...

Evidence of Brilliance on the Sideline

I’ve decided that I’m a pretty good soccer coach. Maybe even a very good coach. I don’t say that with great confidence but my confidence is growing. Over the past couple years I have given my players the bulk of the credit for our winning. They deserve it. They and...
Candle Cafe, Venice Beach, Ca

Since It’s St. Patty’s Day…..

Since it's Saint Patrick's Day I added an image of a Guinness. That's a shot taken while sitting at one of my favorite places, Candle Cafe, in one of my favorite places, Venice Beach, CA. It's a great place to relax while watching people. And eating of course. If...

I’ve written & published two books, both under different aliases.

I’ve started a number of businesses, mostly operating in the shadows.

This is the only public platform I am me.

The spotlight has never been attractive. I prefer working behind the scenes, that’s where things get done. That’s where the power is. There are benefits to this. There are drawbacks. Such is life.

My main focus in life, right now, is to guide my boys, provide for my family and share what I have learned. Some of it is of value, perhaps much of it is of value.

One thing I learned over the past year, maybe two years, is that I love coaching. Coaching is sharing. It is caring.

My Team taught me this lesson over the past year or so. My soccer players. They are mine, I claim them. I am theirs. I hope they want me.

I’m getting too sappy. Read the Articles. Maybe there’s something worth while that will speak to you.

The Problem is Not the Problem…

I was listening to a podcast a few weeks ago, don't remember who it was, and one like struck me hard. "If you are over 50 and looking for a job you are better off tarting your own business. Your chances of getting hired are very slim" Two things passed through my...

Brain.fm Has Ruined My Mornings

I've been using Brain.fm as a subscriber for 13 months (a Christmas present from Jesse :)). I tested it for two months before that. For over a year it was used in the mornings at my desk, it did help my mind focus. When I write or find that I need to pay more...

10 Things the Professional Futsal League can do to Help Itself

1 – Tell us why creating new rules is beneficial to futsal and not just the pockets of owners and sponsors. By changing the rules by which you play you create a new sport. Fans see it as not being futsal. 2 – If you are going to play by rules other than FIFA Laws of...

10 Things Major League Futsal can do to Help Itself

1 – Look more professional, Fix your fonts. Many of the News items on the MLF website have two different sized fonts. This looks amateurish. 2 – Turn off the author tag on posts. All posts are by a Lopez. This makes the MLF look small, the owner and a relative are...

TRAP – PASS – MOVE the Book

This is the first book I’ve published under my own name. Stepping out from behind the curtain, a big step, I prefer to hang out back stage. Anyway, this one’s about soccer, coaching youth soccer specifically. It touches on the mental development of kids, what they can...

I’m Excited, Can You Tell? Reading Think and Grow Rich!

Last night I started reading a book that has been sitting on my desk for over a year. At one time I was an avid reader having 3-4 books going at a time plus a few magazines. Magazines I love because of the short bits of info available. Books are great but my attention...

Influential Reading; Books, Mags & Web

At one point in my life I was a reader. I still enjoy books but do not carve out the time to sit and read a book. There was a period in  life when I might have five books going at any given time rotating to the one that was of most interest when I read. Even more than...
